Child and Family Services

Positive Psychology applied to working with young people is about fostering resilience and acting to prevent the onset of serious mental health issues. Treatment approaches adopted by the 4Life Psychology Centre assist young people towards the development of skills and strategies that enable psychological flexibility and tolerance for difficult feelings like frustration.

Support for Children

Children, like adults, can benefit from psychological support when they experience these significant life events:

  • death of a friend or family member
  • divorce
  • a move (house, city, country, school)
  • bullying
  • abuse
  • trauma
  • a major illness in the family

Psychological support can be a great opportunity for children to develop healthy coping skills. It can teach them how to understand, articulate and express their feelings instead of acting out behaviourally. During difficult times, Kids may also think they need to protect their parents. Therapy provides a safe space for kids to grieve without the concern of impacting on other members of the family.

Parenting Support

When it comes to raising kids, everyone has an opinion. There are so many different theories and approaches out there, it’s hard to know what works. Our child and family psychologist, Parkavi Sabanathan is an accredited provider of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program.

The strengths of this program are:

  • It takes the guesswork out of parenting
  • Is one of the few parenting programs in the world that is found to be effective for most families
  • Gives parents simple tips to help manage the big and small problems of family life. e.g. toddler tantrums, teenage rebellion, self-esteem issues, bedtime battles and much more.

Triple P is often run as a group program. However, we offer individual parenting training sessions in order to tailor strategies to the needs of each family.
